PALS PLUS Information Management Committee Meeting Minutes: 2017

The Information Management Committee meeting called to order at Clifton Public Library

on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 2:26 p.m., by Michael Drazek.

Due to a conflict, the October 5th meeting was changed to the following week Thursday, October 12.

Old Business:

The committee felt it was progressing along and there was no need to revisit past actions.

New Business:

The committee proceeded to take the information from the previous two membership surveys and additional research to begin visualizing what the wiki replacement would look like.

Mary brought a great example from the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) website, to share with the committee, of how their membership interface is designed.

Luca shared that Sirsi has not been pushing a touchscreen interface.  The implication is that libraries are not likely to need upgrading monitors that are touch screen capable.

The feeling was that most usage of the wiki replacement would be from desktop/laptop computers and not likely from small mobile devices.  Still, it is good practice to design websites with mobile device access in mind.

One area that will need to be researched is to simplify or automate the conversion of staff generated documents into HTML or allowing the search of those documents, such as, PDF documents.

The committee used a white board to brainstorm ideas of how the replacement should look and function.  A screenshot follows.

The idea we will be working from is that a landing page will lead to subsections of frequently needed information.  A menu will allow access and the ability to navigate.  External resources may be used to add functionality.  The ability to search should be readily accessible.  One goal is to make information easily located and accessed.  Another goal is the ability to keep the resource easily and quickly updated.

For the August meeting the committee will look to review the ideas and see if they want to make any changes.  The committee will also begin to wire frame a design.
